Kjalvegur and the surrounding area, hemmed in by glaciers and wastelands are the renowned abode of the outlaws of the olden days. The most famous of the Icelandic outlaws was Fjalla – Eyvindur, who endured 18 years in the harsh Icelandic highlands on the run from the law. Legend has it that he spent many a winter at Hveravellir where he not only had water but hot water! This trail takes you into the green Þjófadalir valleys (the Valley of thieves) – where other outlaws spent many a winter in the shadow of Langjökull glacier. Following Fúlakvísl river draining from the glacier you come to a comfortable hut from where you ascend the Hrútfell table mountain. The last day of the trek takes you south to the lake of Hvítárvatn – actually a glacier lagoon from which Hvítá River originates. The famous golden waterfall Gullfoss then sits 30 km downriver at the head of a canyon. After a hike through the surprisingly abundant highland vegetation a short boat ride takes you to the Hvítárnes hut from where you get onto the bus to Reykjavík.
Please note: The tour starts and ends by lake Mývatn.
